How to set up your Google Business Profile (and why it matters)

Local search · October 2, 2026 · Neighborhood Web Co.

When someone searches "coffee shop near me" or a business by name, the box that shows up with a map, hours, photos, and reviews is a Google Business Profile. It's free, and for a local business it's one of the most valuable things you can set up.

Why it matters

  • It can put you on Google Maps and in local search results.
  • Customers can call, get directions, or visit your website straight from the listing.
  • Reviews show up right there, which builds trust fast.

How to set it up

  1. Go to Google Business Profile (business.google.com) and sign in with a Google account you'll keep long term. Use a business email if you have one.
  2. Search for your business. If it already exists, you can claim it. If not, add it.
  3. Choose your category carefully. Pick the most specific primary category that fits, like "Concrete contractor" instead of "Contractor."
  4. Add your location or service area. Storefronts list an address. Businesses that travel to customers can list a service area instead and hide their home address.
  5. Add your phone number and website. Your website link is what turns profile views into real visits.
  6. Verify your business. Google will ask you to confirm the business is yours. The method varies, and can include a phone call, email, video, or postcard.
  7. Fill out everything. Hours, services, a short description, and real photos of your work, your team, and your storefront.

Keep it active

Update your hours for holidays, add new photos now and then, and reply to reviews, good and bad. An active, complete profile looks more trustworthy to customers.

Your profile and your website work together. The profile gets you found. Your website gives people the details and the confidence to call.
